Our Work
The Healthy Alaska Natives Foundation (HANF) believes that health care truly goes beyond treating those who are sick —HANF wants to help Alaska Natives stay out of the hospital in the first place. That’s why HANF supports key initiatives that deliver sustainable, effective and culturally relevant health care, from providing improvements at medical facilities that serve Alaska Natives, to supporting wellness and prevention programs that impact Alaska Native populations, to advancing healthy village environments around Alaska. By facing the greatest health challenges head on, Alaska Native people can lead healthy lifestyles and avoid long-term health issues.
1. Health Care Improvements
Cancer, heart disease, unintentional injuries, suicide, and stroke are the leading causes of death for Alaska Native people.
2. Wellness and Prevention
To keep Alaska Natives healthy in body, mind and spirit, and to avert the high costs of hospital-based care, HANF supports healthy communities through education, program development and promotion of health-conscious lifestyles.
3. Healthy Village Environments
Hepatitis A, bronchitis, impetigo and meningitis are widespread in rural Alaska, where many villages remain without clean water and sanitation.
